What is MPU?

The Medical-Psychological Examination (MPU) is an assessment that is often referred to as the "idiot test" in Germany. It is mandated by the licensing authorities when there are doubts about a person's fitness to drive. The aim of the MPU is to evaluate the physical and mental suitability of the applicant for participating in road traffic.

The four sections of the MPU Assessment

The MPU consists of four essential assessment sections. These sections provide a comprehensive evaluation of the participant's physical and mental suitability, as well as their insight and willingness to avoid future misconduct in road traffic.

Aim and Outcome
of the MPU

The main objective of the MPU is to determine whether the applicant will be able to participate safely and responsibly in road traffic in the future. The results of the individual assessment sections are compiled, and the assessor prepares a final evaluation.

There are three possible outcomes of the MPU:

Positive: The participant has met all the requirements and can regain their driver's license.

Negative: The participant has not met the requirements and may need to undergo a retraining or further measures.

Conditionally Positive: The participant will regain their driver's license under certain
conditions that must be met.
